In 2005 playwright Catherine Roth, freelance Carol Malkin, novelist Carol Lucas and I set-up the Runaway Writers’ Group.
The aims of the group are to develop writers’ skills and opportunities and to promote writing of all types.
The group meets once a fortnight at the Brewhouse Arts Centre in Burton upon Trent on the Derbyshire/ Staffordshire border.
We welcome writers of all abilities and experience levels, including aspiring writers who may not have put a word to paper yet. Age is not a bar, though we can deal with adult themes so under 16's are welcome by prior agreement only.
The basis for meetings is news/critiques, but we have regular writing exercises and mini workshops. We also organise longer Saturday workshops with professional writers, which are open to the public. There is also an e-mail mailing list and facebook page where forthcoming events and matters of interest are shared with members. A website is under development.
The strength of the group is it’s core of experienced members who are happy to share their knowledge with newer writers both at meetings and by e-mail, but who are also prepared to listen to the opinions of the whole group on their own work. These experienced writers also use their contacts for the benefit of the group and it’s members
The group has no fixed membership, but attendance is around 12-15 most meetings. There is a £2 charge per meeting to cover cost of the room, however the first meeting is always free.
